Marijuana is a common drug that people abuse in California and all across the US. While recreational marijuana is legal for use, people on probation or who regularly get drug tested can’t use it without consequences. For this reason, some people seek out drugs that the FDA hasn’t yet outlawed. One of these relatively new drugs is called Delta 8 THC.

Delta 8 is extracted from the marijuana plant. Because of its composition, there are no federal laws against using it, selling it, or purchasing it.  But make no mistake, Delta 8 is a drug, and it’s not the same as naturally occurring THC. For some people, the drug can cause dangerous side effects.

What Is Delta 8 THC?

You’ve probably heard of THC, the active component in marijuana. Delta 8 THC is extracted from the plant. While it is naturally occurring, as an extract, it will be stronger than when used in its natural form.

People who buy or use Delta 8 THC tend to do so because of its legal status. Because it’s not technically illegal, people on probation or parole may think it is safe to use. However, it DOES show up on drug tests and THC, and it IS considered a relapse if a person in recovery chooses to use it. Some companies that sell it online claim you can stop using it for ten days to pass a drug test, but there is no evidence that this is true.

Dangers of Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 is extracted from marijuana plants and added to gummies, prerolls, tinctures, vape cartridges, and edibles. Because it is an extract, it is stronger. It may not be the marijuana that a person is used to. It may also contain contaminants.

Because Delta 8 is quasilegal, it’s only legal through federal loopholes – there are no standard products. This means the quality of the drug or its integrity may be altered. There’s always a chance of cross-contamination. Every company online could close shop tomorrow.

The FDA has started going after Delta 8 sellers online that make medical claims.

Health Effects of Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC also has adverse effects on a person’s health that aren’t seen in everyday recreational marijuana use. While users report pain relief and intense euphoria, the FDA has seen people sick from the drug. Fainting, passing out, vomiting episodes, and hallucinations have been reported since 2018 when the drug began selling on the internet. People have also experienced high heart rates and palpitations when using the drug.

Nobody knows how addictive Delta 8 maybe, but due to its strength, regular users will likely have withdrawal symptoms if they try to cease using it. Headaches, trouble concentrating, sleep disorders, and anxiety are common withdrawal effects for THC users.
